Today we set about storyboarding our music video, and began to run into problems when we realised that, as a group, we were unsure of the specific action that takes place in the music video. Although we are all happy with the overall concept of a split narrative and the idea of a character making a decision, we are all unsure of what specific shots and locations we should include.
Following a discussion with Mrs Fernandez, we are now exploring the possibility of having a less literal, continuity edited video, and having more narrative fuzz, where objects are used to represent the choice. This could include the character breaking the forth wall and using mise-en-scene to explore the two narratives.
As a group, we have not yet made a final decision on what our video should be like and include.
Personally, I feel that the idea of a person breaking the fourth wall and holding objects is a stronger narrative than just watching him walk around and spend the day with his girlfriend.
ReplyDeleteI still feel that our overall concept it strong, but we really need to decide on details and invest time in what specific shots we need. If you are happy to have the boy looking at the camera and showing the two narratives through mise-en-scene, then we need to come up with contrasting shot ideas for the two narratives.
What do you two think?
I agree, the breaking of the fourth wall and the contradicting shots on the two narratives are the strongest aspects now, I believe.
ReplyDeleteThe original idea would probably have been too complicated and not very interesting, especially since we were making shots up just for the sake of it.
However, with the holding objects and breaking the fourth wall, I feel the video would be much more interesting to watch as well as being much clearer whilst still possessing some narrative fuzz.
As for specific shots, I especially liked the idea of having a handi-cam close up from a slightly low angle. This could give the impression of him being drunk on his own. Then we could easily have a further shot where instead of being on his own, he is actually with his girlfriend messing around and being happy.
I will continue to think of contrasting shots to have for both narratives and hopefully we will be able to come up with a much stronger stiryboard than before.
After the class discussion today, we have decided to have a less 'clear cut' split narrative.
ReplyDeleteBy this we mean that in one narrative we have our teenage character conforming to the 'appropriate narrative' that has been set out by him, going to school, seeing friends. In the other narrative, he is showing what he really feels.
The second narrative also has band performance, which also suggests to the audience the concept that he is choosing between his academic life, and his music life, where he is more honest with himself and spends his time in his band. We feel that this is a more honest summary of a teenage life and the choices that teenagers have to make.
